does anyone know how to get rid of the dirt that that congregates on the rubber ring on the inside of the door

Dilute bleach in warm water and wipe with a cloth.

You should wipe the seal every time you use the machine - a couple of sheets of kitchen towel is enough to get rid of the excess water and dirt.
