It seems to me that marriage is more important to the woman than to the man. No statistical evidence to support this, just a multitude of anecdotes.
Me? once. I tell her "Valerie, you are not the one I wanted, you are the one I got"
I then make a dash for it and lock myself in my study

Just the once, although the present Mrs Hughes is on her second go.
I do believe that a lot of people marry because of pressure from friends and family. The constant drip-drip-drip of "You've been together a while now, are you making an honest woman of her?" and all that garbage.
Similarly, people have children without due thought and consideration becauxe of the "Time for the pitter patter of tiny feet / making us grandparents." tosh.
I got it all, being with a divorcee with two small children - but we got married when and because we wanted to, and ignored all the pressures.
Then I go the "Well, you'll be wanting one of your own now won't you?" What does that make the two we have - houseguests????
Tell 'em all to butt out - do what you want if you want, and not if you don't.
Freedom to choose - that's my approach.
