Originally named Saint-Louis-du-Fort in honour of French King Louis XIV, the modern city stands on the banks of a river which gives its name to the entire surrounding region. What is the name of that river?

Previous answer was suggested as Senegal, but I don't think that's correct. However, not sure what the correct answer is.

Can anyone please help?

Im also very wary of Senegal, but cant confirm th eanswer either as yet.

OK THECORBYLOON, if Senegal is the answer, what is the name of the modern city? I'm still not convinced . I have been through all the Mississippi and Texas stuff too, and still not happy.

Does anyone have the definitive answer?
I've looked on the web , in Brittanica , and Encarta.
EB was no help - SLDF did not appear as a phrase at all.
Enc - seems to go with Senegal. Modern city called St Louis.
Not definitive proof I know but all I can find at the moment.
We still have a week left!
Dare I say 'Bata' ? !!!!!

The river is called the River Senegal, the country is called Senegal, the place was called Saint-Louis-du-Fort in honour of the French King so to me, Senegal appears to be the answer. I'm not doing this quiz so it's up to you but that's what I think.

Anyway, I have an elephant to get ready for a tag-team jelly fight.

The city in Senegal is now known as just Saint Louis, it was originally named Saint Louis Du Fort, it is on the river senegal in the country of Senegal.

The city of Saint Louis on the mississippi river is named after king Louis the X1V and is in Saint Louis county

BUT the Mississippi does not give it's name to the entire surrounding region.

I'd go with Saint Louis Senegal

Why do you think that answer is wrong hotrocker?

Did any one see this answer to your question posted on People and Places?

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/People_and_Places/Question103548.html

It was answered by Louis himself!

Corbyloon I laughed like a drain!

The big problem with the Senegal answer is that the one and only website says that the ISLAND (now Ndar) was formerly call St-Louis-du-fort and not the city which is now St Louis.
According to Britanniac St.Louis Missouri was named after Louis IX of France

I'm still not sure about Senegal. The following site says that Saint-Louis was named after Louis XIII.

However, I don't yet have an alternative suggestion
