to plasterboard a ceiling

to support 12.5mm plasterboard i am informed by a workmate that the timber can be 600mm/24ins apart.
is this correct ? as i thought 16 ins was good practise
any advice, thanks in advance

can depend on the span of ceiling, 4x2 (95x50) up to 10' span 24"would be o.k, make sure you use dry wall screws all around and across at around 12" spaces, dont forget noggins , these are sections of timber going across in between joists middle and ends. what size is the room??

If it's got a floor above to support,then I'd go for the 16" option.

the room is a new garage with an ensuite above, 3.6mts long in the centre of the garage space.the garage is 8mts long by 2.7mts wide.
the garage will therefore have insulation between the 175mm by 45mm joists with double plasterboard because of fire regs

If your plasterboard is going underside of your floor joists as ceiling ,then your joists should be be at 400mm centers anyway. Look at your tape measure ,it is marked already for joist centers. if not a floor and just ceiling then as first answer yesterday. screw up first layer of boards then set next layer so boards cover joints .Double 12.5 boards require min 65mm drywall screws.

the two lintels supporting the ensuite walls are lower than the joists and to get under them and to create one level ceiling two inch timber is being screwed to the joists at right angles and so the spacing is optional but thanks for your answers anyway.they have given me a lot of help. i dont like 600mm centres but its legal although now at the end of an extension im beginning to realisle that meeting the building regs does,nt always feel so good, standards wise

Now you've said there's a bathroom going above, I'd definatley go for the 16" option.
