Our wee guy can never have enough books. He's 18 months old now and just loves them. If anyone asks what to get him as a pressie, I suggest books, or if they don't want to risk buying duplicate books, a book token. If the wee guy is going to be one, there are lots of great books for that age. Charlie's favourites are ones where you lift flaps on the page to reveal hidden things, or the ones with different textures that 1yr old fingers love to explore. Our wee guys just gets so excited every time we read them. There's a range called Usborne touchy-feely books which are absolutely brilliant (even his dad and I dont' get fed up with them!). I know Borders Books do them, and often have 3 for 2 offers, but you also get them in Early Learning Centres.
Clarks vouchers - first shoes are expensive! - and a book or small toy for the baby.
A fantastic present, which has been a massive hit for the babies I have bought it for, is the ELC light and sound drum (Boots do their own version) It's 10 and all the one year olds I have bought it for, love it!

Be wary of spending 40 on a toy at this stage as they grow out of them so quick. Also big toys take up far too much room...garden toys are a good idea though. Little Tikes do a good range around the 10 mark. We bought my son a 'quad' when he was one and he still plays on it at five!
