books nowadays are fantastic for kids, not the dreary educational books we had as kids.
is he interested in football, how about, football related gifts
dvds or cds very popular
those robots are really popular at the moment
remote controlled cars
mini fridge
there are lots of harry potter games and toys too
starwars toys
argos are great for gifts and so are wileys toyshops
good luck with the present buying
Mine's really "into" the Legos Star Wars based figures and vehicles, etc. He started about a year ago and i had to help him sort them, but now he whips them together by himself. Check here for descriptions...

I'm sure they're sold in the U.K.
Your cheapest option is Friendship - whether it's your son, nephew, cousin or friend's son - friendship. Take him out somewhere he may never have gone - broaden his horizons. I have three young sons, 9, 7 & 5 - my best days have been when we have gone out cycling or to an adventure park or good museum. Presents are ok but they wont last long and will most likely be one present amongst many - "the greatest of all is love"
The best place for cheap, but good quality, walkie-talkies is your local Maplin electronics store. You can find the nearest store here:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/StoreLocator.aspx?doy=24m9
(I don't recommend the rest of the Maplins web site. You'll probably find yourself looking for ages for something suitable, only to find 'This item has been discontinued' at the bottom of the page. Wonderful company - Crap web site!).
Hang on! - I've just found something suitable on the Argos site:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product Display?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=3801&a mp;productId=161335&Trail=C%24cip%3D28803.Office%2C% 2BPC%2Band%2Bphones%3EC%24cip%3D28846.Two-way%2Bradios&a mp;categoryId=28846&clickfrom=name
If this suggestion doesn't appeal, I suggest that you ask for some suggestions in your local Toys R Us, choose your item and then walk out and buy it in Argos! (It'll almost certainly be cheaper than Toys R Us!!).
I hope that the young
I think that all that have been said would be great for a nine year old, I would go with Clanad's suggestion though! Lego is always fun, for girls too. When my brother and I was at that age we loved Lego (still do btw)! I think they do a line called bionicle which is robot lego.
My boyfriend who works with kids that age says: Games for playstation or gameboy, Lego, if they're into those collecting cards - think they're called Dualmaster cards, pokemon cards etc., robots or action figures.
