Here did anyone see Could you Eat an Elephant on the tele last nite??

How gross was that programme - although, I must commend those two for even thinking of trying half the stuff they did! Imagine selling cheese in Tesco's crawling with maggots?? or horsemeat kebabs on the hot food counter??

I do not though blame them for refusing to eat the elephant!!

I was quite ashamed at the pictures though of those poor dogs and the way they were handled - no wonder them two felt ill after eating some. I know, I know, they are bred for the purpose of eating, but is this really right? should there not be some law against it?

Sorry, just having a wee winge this morning! I love dogs, but.......No, I could definately not eat one!!

I found the dog part distressing. Aren't we being a bit contradictory to say it's wrong to breed dogs for eating but it's not wrong to breed chickens/cattle for eating?

I'm not saying I think it's right to eat dog (and I never ever will), but I also can't see how we can complain about one animal and not another......

Lakitu - you are absolutely correct - I did have a think about that whilst watching this programme and believe me I am seriously thinking of giving up meat all together!!

When they were going to slaughter the horses I just thought of the way they take cows etc - no difference whatsoever!

Yuk, and I told my mum I wasnt goin to watch it when it was advertised - but was just curious - wish I hadnt now. gross!!!!!

For the first time in my life, I thought about giving up meat while I was watching that.

I've never had a problem watching shows like this before, I watched Kill it, Cook it, Eat it without squirming or thoughts of vegetarianism entering my head, but this show did bother me for some reason.

The part with the snake heart, that's just wrong. I can't help but wonder if they are eating a beating heart because they genuinely think it's of benefit to them or just purely because it makes people gasp.

Ripping the rats teeth out? Absolutely no need for that, the thing was alive and very aware of pain. I'm no fan of rats, but I don't want them hurt either :(

Anyone who can sit down and watch a programme like this and not let it bother them, I think have no feelings.

I think that because this really does happen around these countries makes it seem worse - I suppose if you were brought up eating snake, dog or monkey you would'nt know any different, just like us only eating cows, pigs, sheep and being brought up to respect animals and have pets like dogs and go to the zoo only to see the monkeys and elephants etc (not to eat them).

i saw a ilttle bit of this, but i remember one that a food writer was doing and he went to korea to investigate the dog eating culture there and he got right to the point at then end of being in a resturant and then couldn't do it at then end and ordered chicken. i don't know why i can eat cows. pigs, chickens but the thought of eating dogs horrifies me
dont they say you should not eat anything that eats meat itself? perhaps our abhorrence of eating a dog is instinct and the countries that eat dog are rather poorer than us in the uk so they dont have the luxury of being so picky.
That's a very good point, mandimoo, maybe it is an instinct for us not to eat an animal that eats meat.

Do you think it was more the poor conditions those dogs were kept in whilst alive that was more distressing than the fact they eat them??
Basicially, all the meat animals in the Uk such as cows and Sheep are kept in fields or cow sheds. They are not delivered direct to the restaurant all trussed up in a wire basket still alive and whimpering.
Ok they have to be slaughtered , but I would bet our slaughter houses are far better and give a quicker more humane death than the death those chinese cooks probably deal out.
Personally, I would not want to eat dog however well it was farmed and cooked. I do seem to remember reading somewhere that humans should not eat meat eating animals. I just imagine it would taste of wet dog. Yuk. they are far nicer, alive and cuddly.

I must admit - I've scrolled through and not read in detail.. I missed this programme - is it on again.. or repeated..?

Hi folks - silvercat had a good thought - more than likely was the thought of the way they were being treated rather than the thought of eating them.

hippyhoppy - not sure if will be repeated - need to check tv listings again. Although, you know our television programming - always repeats of the same programmes all the time!!!
