Possible Wheel Bearings??
I was driving back from Twickenham yesterday, didn't hear anything till I was coming into my village. I hear a high pitched whooshing sound coming what seems like the back drivers side wheel. To me it sounds like metal shavings, the sound stops when I turn left or right. Trouble is, it seems to get louder for a second when braking, then it'll stop.. Im worried as I can't get anything done about it due to the lack of funds till middle of next month. Does anyone know what it could be and what the cost is? I have a Hyundai Trajet 04 reg

I agree with the brake pad diagnosis. Some pads have a metal insert which is designed to rub against the brake disc when the pads wear down. This produces a screeching sound which supposedly alerts you to the need to replace the pads. I've never had these but it seems reasonable to assume they could screech a little when not braking, screech more when braking gently, then not screech at all when braking hard. I don't know why there would be no sound when cornering. Does anyone have experience of this type of brake pad?
Just an update on my question Thank you all for you replies and it was my brakes. You were right eltelioni, I do have the wear indicators and that was making the noise. I had to have the front pads and discs and the rear pads done 290 at FastFit ( Which I thought was reasonable as Hyundai quoted me 600!! ) Thanks again for all your help
