I only ask for an answer when I have tried to get it myself, and failed. The "satisfaction" - if you want to call it that - is that I am then able to understand how the answer is arrived at and why I could not solve it.

I do not do the quizzez that you are referring to. So, I repeat, if I have no idea where the question comes from, and whether giving an answer is "not the done thing", then I accept no responsibility for breaking some rule that I have no knowledge of.

The onus not to break the rules is on the person asking the question.
Rollo - I agree that the onus is on those asking, but when it has been widely stated that certain quizzes request that their answers are not given away, I don't see why those who answer can't abide by those requests and not pander to the lazy people.

As far as understanding an answer you cannot find yourself, surely you learn by your mistakes? You can understand the answer once you have your answers returned to you after the quiz has finished. There is only one word for using an answer provided by someone else and claiming it as your own.
You keep sayin that

"it has been widely stated that certain quizzes request that their answers are not given away"

That may be true, but how am I expected to know that if I am not doing that quiz? I am not going to trawl through pages of posts before I answer a question posed here, in case it is one of those that somebody has said should not be answered.

Let me guess. The word you refer to is "cheating".

I would only agree with that if there was a stated rule attached to the quiz saying that the quiz has to be completed under "examination conditions" - no outside help allowed.

Anyway, it is of no real consequence in the greater scheme of things.
boysinblue you would be careful to avoid calling folk cheats. Anyone is free to ask for answers to any question.
Rollo and TCL-MUMPING - perhaps you would be kind enough to tell me where I mentioned the word "cheat". That comes form both of you!

I was more thinking of the word desperate. Anyone who has to resort to getting someone else to answer a question (and then claim that answer for themselves) in quizzes for which the prize money is hardly life-changing must be desperate.

Rollo - you've been on here long enough to have seen all the comments, so I don't think you can use that as an excuse.

TCL-MUMPING - I will repeat the pleas of the quizsetter on GFQ and GBQ where he asks that his quizzes are not ruined by answers being freely given away on here. There is something in life called ethics or integrity!
Just found a site asking for answers to GBQ ( I dont do it so I wasnt looking for that reason) and no one has answered and it says the question will be removed
On here no one seems to care what is asked

All I would like is for people asking to put what quiz it is from so some of us might realise
not calling Fun of the fair - entertaiment or the famous its a local quiz
and be brave enough to ask all their missing ones in one go not 6 every day for a week with the equally famous I need a kick start
smouse - thanks for that and for the support.

Perhaps Rollo and TCL-MUMPING will take the hint now that someone else has mentioned it.

I totally agree with your comments about not naming the quiz and asking for a few at a time. I think just about every question on Ian Rennie has been asked, so you're comment about the triangles being crucial will prove to be true - until, of course, someone asks about them!
Would you say it was wrong to think you meant cheat when you have said the following?

I just want to answer the questions myself and pit my wits against like minded people who do not want to cheat - some hope in this day and age! 29.12.08

Searching for an answer in the internet, looking in a book, going to the library, asking the "other half"-all things you can do yourself-no one else will be aware of any answer you may have found-so that's not cheating Aquagility, but you obviously know that, don't you? 20.6.08

If you have the quiz, you will already have paid for it and therefore contributed to the charity - so there is no need to cheat and get other people to do the hard work for you. 11.5.08

Charity quizzes make their money by people buying the quiz. Why then do people need to cheat to get the answers? 13.1.08
Wow you must have nothing better to do!

Do you actually do quizzes?

Cant you see that some people are taking asking for answers too far.

I've said before I don't totally agree with Boysinblue as I do ask and I do give a lot of answers but only to the ones who you get to know really are trying.

You must have noticed the names of people who ask all the time and often before some of us have even got the quiz.. What annoys me most is the way they accept answers and never asked how it is worked out so they cant even claim to be learning.

There should be no rush to finish it there is no prize for that so I say once again lets try to be honest about which quiz we are asking from and how many we really need.

What I have noticed is the same folk mumping about folk asking for answers and mumping about folk like me who give them. As for having nothing to do I don't do quizzes, I don't know the questions from every quiz, I don't recognise the names of every quiz and I don't know the closing dates of every quiz, unlike some folk it seems.
smouse - excellent, many thanks and very well put.

TCL-MUMPING - yes, I'll admit I used the "cheat" word before, but you did jump to conclusions - rightly or wrongly. Whatever word you care to use to describe the people who ask as soon as a quiz is published or ask for almost every answer in a quiz, it amounts to the same thing.

I'm not sure you can use ignorance of all the quizzes to cover yourself. One might also ask that if you don't do quizzes, what are you doing on a Q&P site and why do you have to spoil the fun for those of us who do?
You say I jumped to conclusions rightly or wrongly and then say
"Whatever word you care to use to describe the people who ask as soon as a quiz is published or ask for almost every answer in a quiz, it amounts to the same thing."

The conclusion was correct then.

"I'm not sure you can use ignorance of all the quizzes to cover yourself. One might also ask that if you don't do quizzes, what are you doing on a Q&P site and why do you have to spoil the fun for those of us who do?"

I am on a Q & P site because folk ask for help and I am more than happy to help. You insist you do not ask for answers and I think it safe to assume you do not give them so why are you on this site?

As for spoiling folk's fun what about the many many folk that I have helped compared to the few folk such as you who have done nothing but mump?
I do think because you dont quiz you dont see the bit I dont like which is asking too soon and not saying which quiz or the closing date as hopefully then you would perhaps wait a bit before wanting to be a clever clogs by jumping in with the odd answer
I suggest you buy one of the harder quiz and then perhaps you'll see the effort some of us put in

I see you got a mention the the macmillan dingbat thread boysinblue but I did stick up for you

smouse - yes I saw the thread. I think I'll let you defend my honour - you have a much better way with words than I do!

TCL-MUMPING - I think smouse's idea is perfect - buy one of the harder quizzes and then see life from the other side. Whilst we toil away trying to get answers by our own efforts - and certainly in my case, leaving blank spaces if I can't find an answer, you continue to help those who simply can't be bothered to put in the effort. And they will continue to ask as long as you continue to give answers away.
