They will eat absolutely anything - this includes baby birds from the nest, or the electric wiring in your house!! They often get into the loft and cause all sorts of damage and I've known of one instance when a squirrel actually caused a fire that made the house burn down! I wouldn't cause any animal suffering, or be deliberately cruel to any creature, but vermin need to be kept down - humanely, of course.
These rules about controlling pests are most bizarre. It looks as though the reason it's illegal to release a grey squirrel into the wild is that it's still regarded as an alien species, introduced, notwithstanding that the Act itself defines such a species in terms suggesting it's any species which is not naturally here in the wild. How long to they have to be here to qualify as not alien but naturally here?
And there is no legal definition of vermin, to define the grey as 'vermin'
And you might have thought a man with a general licence to have a gun could shoot woodpigeons on sight. Not so.He's only allowed to do it if they are causing substantial damage to crops. On the other hand, it may be that in 2010 some parakeets will be added to the creatures that can be shot [Source for this paragraph: The Field ]
