How long ago?

You can be chased for the debt for ever but after 6 years of no contact, the debt becomes 'statute barred' which means that you can not be taken to court to enforce payment.

It is 6 years from when you last acknowledged that you owe the money or from when you made a payment.

Google 'statute barred' and read up.
The precise amount isn't relevant.
As CheekyChops says the debt remains but can become statute barred.
How many years ago was the debt incurred?
Have you had any contact from them in the last 6 years?
Have you changed address without giving them the details?

Does this also apply to student loans from SLC?

Thanks for your responses. In answer to your questions,

How long ago?
The last time I was chased for this debt was back in 2003 by a company called Black Horse. They were taken over by Cabot Financial who started chasing me in September.

Have you had any contact from them in the last 6 years?
The first contact I had from them was October last year & before that I had heard nothing from them since 2003.

Have you changed address without giving them the details?
Yes, I moved about 2 years ago.

Does this also apply to student loans from SLC?
No
In the circumstances the debt is not going to be statute barred and they can continue to pursue you for the money.
You must notify them of address changes or you will never be able to claim that the debt is statute barred.
Can you not afford to pay something or are you hoping the whole thing will go away?
How much do you owe, and do you have otehr debts

Thanks for your comments. But I'm abit confused, does this mean that they can still take me to court, even after 6 years??

I did try to contact them & see if I could pay the sum off but them wanted to clear this immediately & pratically laughed when I asked if I could pay it off in installments.

I don't have any other debts, just this one & I owe 2500.18.
Yes they can still chase you and take you to court as it's less than six years since they last chased you. The debt won't go away.
