Installing USB2

I want to install a hi-speed USB device on my PC. Never had the lid off before. Could someone give me step-by-step instructions, please.

PS. The PC is Windows XP with service pack 3.

you don't need to take the case off to install a USB device, if it comes with a CD then put the CD in the drive and start the setup and simply plug the device into a USB port when instructed by the software.

Thanks, CF. I think I mean a USB2 drive that fits into an internal slot. Am I making sense ?

You are to me, because I had USB1's on my old PC and tried to change them. I installed OK (so I thought) but they never worked.

you can buy a four port USB 2.0 card that will fit into a spare PCI slot on your motherboard. I think they are about �10-15

Difficult to give precise instructions as we don't know what case and motherboard you have.
Some cases you take the top off and that releases the sides, others you remove screws at the back and slide the sides of backwards, one of mine you just pull a catch and the side drops down with the motherboard attached.

Anyway if you can work out how to get in:

First disconnect from the mains (not for your safety, but because the motherboard could get damaged if there is any power to it while you're working on it. The off switch at the front of your machine does not actually switch it off, but just puts it into standby).

At the back of the motherboard you will see some cream coloured slots. They face a panel with removable blanking strips. Some machines the strips are screwed in, others you have to punch them or prise them out with a screwdriver.

Line the edge connector of the card up with a vacant slot and work out which panel to remove. Remove the panel, press the card into the slot and secure it with the screw that came with it. Put the case back together.

hi i don't know the configuration of your computer so i cannot say you that the usb 2.0 will support or not but i will give you the path if you get any cd with the usb2.0 than put the cd into the cd rom of the computer and run the software so that the drivers are installed properly and than plug the usb into the usb port and definitely it will work if you follow the procedure
