Many soft drinks now seem to be using the alternative (cheaper) sweeteners such as Aspartame (tm) which contains phenylalanine (sp.?). Much has been written about this sustance and I'm no expert, but if you're concerned (and you should be well informed about stuff you're putting in your body) you can do some research of you own and make up your own mind, there's plenty of stuff online, just remember that some of it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt (but not too much if you value your blood pressure limits :)))

In short I stick to good old Sugar.

aspartame is the bad guy.  when I began work at a research laboratory many years ago, they used aspartame as an example of why research into what we consume needs to be done in a proper, reproducible and professional manner.  Google aspartame, you'll get loads of info.
phenylalanine  is the correct spelling. Phenyly enough.

There was a sweetener (sacharin?) which, in sufficient quantities, caused cancer in rats.

I've been told, however,  that about 70 percent of things given in sufficient quantity in rats will give them cancer. If it did in humans in reasonable quantities then there is no way it would be on the market.

Phenylalanine can act as a laxative if you have too much - don't swallow your sugar free gum, since this is the substance used in their sweeteners. Also found in some mints I think.
If you have too much phenylalanine it makes your brain have fits or something, I say its ok in moderation, normal coke is nasty
btw I think its already eaten your brain judging by your spelling.....
For the non-diet version, they don't even use sugar any more, though, do they? It's a high fructose corn syrup...
fredo - I'm not being rude, but your post should read ''substitute" and "cancer" and "Apparently".
Marmaduke - high fructose corn syrup is sugar, but they prefer to use another name because many peole try to avoid sugar.

Thank you Dark Angel and funkychicken!!!  You read my mind!  If I'd said it, I'd get my answer banned though - as the AB editor hates me.  But thanks for saying it!

Fredo - if we avoided all the tiny things that can give us cancer I suspect we'd die of starvation.  Steer clear of cigarettes and fast moving big buses, and you should be fine! :-)

Dark angel i have huge trouble with spelling, thanks for the corect spelling.

if i spelt any thing wrong in the last post who cares!

By the way - I didn't mean to cause offence or upset you.  I can never tell who finds spelling hard, who is dyslexic and who is just being lazy.  Lazy spelling annoys me very much.  People who find spelling hard are a different matter though.

I really wouldn't worry about the diet coke though mate.  Although fizzy drinks do rot the teeth, so perhaps we should all brush after drinking!

acw just like to point out your supposed to wait at least 30 mins after drinking fizzy drinks before brushing your teeth as the acid attacks the enamel on your teeth and if you brush your teeth before that 30 mins is up you damage the enamel on your teeth, and that ain't good.
(just thought i should point it out incase you didn't know, my orthodontist told me)

Cheers funky! My enamel is a total state anyway - so it needs all the help it can get.  That said, I really only dirnk fizzy drinks as a mixer, in which case my priority is not usually brushing teeth immediately.  Although I guess it is closer to bedtime!
i think you mean apparently, suBstatue and cancer. by the looks of it i would stay off the fizzy drinks all together looks like they are messing with your brain
