unpaid car tax after car was sold
\after three years i have received a letter from a debt recovery firm demanding payment for an untaxed vehicle. I sold the car three years ago to a garage, that subsequently went out of business. They must not have sent the documents off and sold the car on.How can i fight this as this is the first correspondance i have had about this and i am far from happy as the car had valid road tax when i sold it.

They have always been very helpful when I have needed to contact them.

When you sold the car did you notify the DVLA? The Direct Gov site (see link below) says:
Selling to a motor trader
If you transfer your vehicle to a motor trader and you have a registration certificate you should tell DVLA of the change using the yellow section (V5C/3) and pass the rest to the trader.

Maybe I'm just being thick, but I didn't think they chased unpaid car tax. I thought they just seized the car if it wasn't paid.
On a slighly different subject, I sold a car on, and subsequently got speeding tickets. I had notified DVLA but it must have got lost. Whatever, they were very helpful, and with their help and co-operation I was able to satisfy the ticket issuer that I had nothing to do with it.
