searching for book title

[Francis Asis]

I read this book about 20 years ago. It was set in WW2 in a village in occupied Italy. A German soldier fell in love with a village girl but then he had to murder some villagers and she spent the next 20 years trying to track him down so he could stand trial. In the meantime he became a priest. His name was Carl. That's all I remember. Can anyone help?
