Beans in recipe
13 Answers
Hi!
I have a recipe which asks for 200g of flageolet tinned beans. My question is this, does it mean a 200g tin of beans (weight includes the liquid) or 200g drained beans. This makes a big difference as it's the difference between a big tin and a small tin.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.i have a tin of asda flageolot beans sitting in front of me and the weight says 290g, then underneath it says net drained weight 175g. if i was doing a recipe which asked for 200g i would just use this tin. depending how much bigger a large tin is, i would use that if it was the only one i could get, unless it was a giant tin.....
does the recipe call for you to be absolutely exact? if it's a stew or soup i can't really see it making much difference. to be honest, i always tweak recipes to suit my own taste and usually use far more veg than it says.
ps. what are you making?

ethandron, this is the recipe I'm making : Grilled veggie macaroni
It's the third line that I'm not sure about, is it 400g drained beans or a 400g tin? I'm only doing half the recipe as it's just for 2, hence my 200g question.

Now ACB, I have read it and I KNOW it says drained. That isn't my question (I wouldn't dream of using flageolet beans which hadn't been drained and rinsed.) I don't know if it means that the recipe needs a 400g tin (so with liquid) or 400g beans once drained.
If you read it again you'll understand my dilemma.

Hi ethandron
made it last night and it's quite nice considering no fish or meat in it. I had to make my own cheese sauce as can't buy it here but next time I do it I'll add some tabasco or something to give it a bit more umph. Read your answer on the bleeding vine thread. How do you order a row of vines plus wine for a Christmas pressie? it'll be a good idea for future reference.

the one we were given was by a company called wineshare, and ours was at domaine du grand mayne. i believe there are lots of companies which do something similar though. it's a gimmick really, but for anyone who has even a slight interest in wine and/or food, it's a bit different for a christmas (or any) present. because we go to france for long trips too, it was nice to go and have a personal tour round the vinyard and actually see the grapes growing. we've drunk all the wine now, but i've kept some of the empty bottles with our own personalised label on them.
i may give your recipe a go as we're trying to get away from having meals based round meat all the time. if i do i'll take your tip and spice it up a bit.
