Flash drives

Having had a close shave with my HD recently I'm considering buying a flash drive to keep all my photos on

Can anybody recommend one from their own experience - preferably shockproof and waterproof as I'm incredibly clumsy

Most of them are pretty tough. I did see a website that ran a torture test. Sorry can't remember what brand was recommended.

One of the drives that survived being left on the dash of a car in the sun and put through a hot wash sounds like one I have.

However I wouldn't recommend a Soniq drive because it is very small and matt black. Too easy to lose.

I have a free on from Microsoft. It is a very common design that has a loop of aluminium that swings to cover the plug end. It has been through the wash and still works fine.

Though better than nothing I wouldn't really recommend a flash drive for anything other than short term backup (i.e. they are OK if you use more than one on a daily rotational system of backups)

For long term backups they are not reliable enough. you would be much better burning your pictures to DVD or CD, make two copies on decent quality media and store them properly, preferably in separate places and if you need to look at anything in the backup only use on copy, leave the other totally untouched.
