I think it's 14 units a week for women and 21 for men. Although it's recommended to have at least one alcohol free day a week as well. I know - I laughed when I read that as well.
What you're allowed and what you drink are really two different answers. The biggest problem is not how much but when - usually Friday and Saturday evenings, and that can lead to binge drinking which appears to be the nemesis of British culture and what the establishment is uptight about. I reckon that even if bars were allowed to open 24 hours a day binge drinking would still happen. The best answer is what you're comfortable with, always assuming your other half doesn't object to strongly
Boog's answer is right but misleading as well. The goverment guildlines are written exactly like this but as any doctor will tell you it means 3 units per day for men and 2 for women and it's not supposed to be stored up on a weekly basis. If you miss a day you have lost that day's allocation and you're not supposed to have say 12 units one day and then not drink for the next three either.
I've been telling myself that i'm just "rolling over" the credits i'm owed for the first 16 or so years of my life! (come to think of it, i've probably exhausted them by now)
