2/4x agp in a 8/4x motherboard?

I need to know if you can put a 4/2x AGP Nvidia video card in a mothererboard that says 4/8x AGP. Will it damage the board??

Hello, the short answer is yes you can. Almost all the top AGP cards at the moment are 4x maximum, i think only the ATI Radeon 9700 is 8x. (i'm not sure, that might even be only 4x, but it's the current top card). It really wouldn't be fair of the manufacturers to expect the consumer to pay �300 plus for an AGP card and then have to spend another �100 on a new motherboard that supports 8x AGP! To set the AGP transfer rate you need to enter the BIOS setup and select 2x, 4x, or 8x - whichever is the maximum that your motherboard supports. It won't damage your motherboard if the AGP card is only running at 4x, even if your motherboard suports 8x. A friend of mine has a GeForce 3 card (2x or 4x) running brilliantly in a Gigabyte motherboard which supports AGP 8x. Basically, with a motherboard that supports 8x you're just slightly more future proofed for when they make more 8x AGP cards available. You will just get better graphical performance with an 8x AGP card in an 8x compatible motherboard.
