Microbes (bacteria) are spread or disbursed in many ways.  They even ride on air or water.  When they are dormant, they form spores awaiting the most opportune time to multiply again.  One of scientists concerns in space travel is unwittingly contaminating other planets with microbes from earth... or vice versa...
