If you get caught by the police sitting at the side of the road with their speed thingy, do they stop you and pull you over or do they send a letter to you?

I was driving very carefully today because I'm so paranoid about getting caught speeding. The only time I went a few mph over was going out of a 30, into a national speed limit on a country road. Sitting right by the national sign, hidden in a field were the police.

If you were caught speeding the registered keeper will receive a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) within 14 days. If you are the registered keeper and you hear nothing within this time you are in the clear.

There are tolerances too so if you only went 2-3mph over the limit once or twice you should be ok anyway. 36+mph in a 30 and you should expect a �60 and 3 points.

Although almost all NIPs are sent out in time, you are not necessarily in the clear if you do not receive one within 14 days. The legislation says that it should be sent so as to arrive with the Registered Keeper within 14 days in normal circumstances.

This means that the matter is not null and void if, say, the notice gets lost in the post.

There is an absolute limit of six months for any prosecution to begin its way through the courts.

The Association of Chief Police Officers� guidelines say that speeding prosecutions (or fixed penalties) should not take place below 10% + 2mph. For a 30mph limit this is 35mph.

Six years ago I was hurrying home from Gatwick Airport on the M27 and was doing 103mph at Fareham so that I could see my very young grandchildren before they were put to bed (or so I told the police) and I had to wait for about 4 months before my case came up. �165 and 6 points but no ban, because the road was dry and I was driving in a safe although illegal way and not much traffic at the time. My car was going much faster before Fareham so I was very fortunate.

if it was the police they may have been doing something else not catching speeders. where i live nr gosport Hants when there is mobile speed cameras around i have seen camera signs before you get to the actual cameras,i dont actually speed but the other day there was a a speed trap but it wasnt a camera and there were no signs and they did check my speed ,like you i was scared even though i was doing 28 in a 30 zone ,what made me laugh was it was 8.30 am on a sunday so there wasnt really any one about to catch ,so i dont know why they were there.
