Irrespective of the categories that appear on your licence, you'll require a CPC if you drive a vehicle of 3.5 tonnes or over.

The requirement is stated thus (see first link below):
"As a professional driver you will need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to retain your Driver CPC".

However anyone already driving such vehicles will automatically be granted their initial CPC. So they won't have to complete their first period of training until 9 September 2014.

The Driver CPC came into force for PCV vdrivers last Sept and will come into force for LGV drivers this September. I will do this from the LGV driver view (as thats what I am), but PCV drivers are a year before(if you see what I mean). If you have a current LGV licence before Sept 09 you will be given a Driver CPC under grandfather rights. This lasts for 5 years. By the end of that 5 years you must have had 35 hours of appropriate training and no 'course' may be less than 7 hours. (To put it another way, you have got to have 5 days training). You will then be given (apparently at no cost) your new CPC in Sept 2014. There is no obligation on employers to provide or (more importantly) pay for training...and it ain't going to be cheap!! Many drivers in their 40's and 50's have said come 2014 they will give up. Most have been driving for years and don't want some jumped up herbert to tell them how to do the job they have had hands on experience of for the last umpteen years. The government has still not decided if they will carry through this scheme (as it is so unpopular), but it will certainly start. Please note, this is nothing to do with the Operators Licence CPC, though of course, there has been lots of confusion.
