I've heard that the rooms are sensible and comfortable, but not overly luxurious, so great for family, not so great for romantic getaway.
When you arrive, you can always ask the clerk to see the room before you accept it. If you think all the hotels will be booked that season, then you might do better to contact an American travel agent person who knows that area and ask him/her for some suggestions.
I don't know really how you'd find a local travel agent, but I suppose you could find the chamber of commerce in the city you plan to visit and telephone them. They will have a list of local businesses and can probably give you a few travel agents who live in the city you plan to visit.
