Siphoning petrol

Being the tightwad skinflint that I am - I have a car on my driveway that is going for scrap. It has almost two-thirds of a tank of petrol in it. I would like to siphon this petrol off to put in my own car. Being a girl (!) - I don't really know how to do this properly apart from sucking through a tube and no doubt getting a moutful of petrol. Is there an easy way? Any tips?

if you have anmechanical fuel pump : how about; take the fuel pipe off the carbureter, put the end in your container. next put a tube on the carb and on the other end a small container like a pop bottle. ( make sure it doesn't melt when petrol is applied ) then using some fuel in the container , run the engine and allow the fuel pump to empty the tank for you.

but

IF you have an ELECTRIC fuel pump, put the pipe off carb in container and then just turn the ignition on, no need to run the engine, and it'll empty the tank. ( may need an extra battery and jump leads to assist old battery if it's weak. )

Don't suck....Blow!

If you suck the petrol through a tube you are in danger of getting a mouthful of petrol or at least a lung full of fumes.

Put a piece of pipe into the tank, blow through it until you hear bubbles (so you know you've reached the petrol) then wrap a damp cloth around the pipe at the neck of the filler to form an air tight seal then blow hard into it, this will increase the preasure inside the tank so when you stop blowing the air pressure inside will force the petrol up through the pipe.

Once the petrol is flowing you can remove the cloth and the syphoning efect will keep it coming. to stop the flow (if you container is full) simply lift the end of the pipe higher than the tank.
