First Novels

I heard, on the radio, recently the titles of several first novels by now 'celebrated' authors. The novels that never quite made it past pulping after a fortnight. Can anybody tell me what the Salman Rushdie first attempt was? And was it really any worse than the anteater catarrh he has produced since? So that's 1) The actual answer, and 2) The opinion.
