I filled it all out (didn't pay) but the matches I get seem to come from miles away, some the other end of the country.

Why? surely one requirement for a successful match is that you are actually able to see each other reasonably regularly.

you may get better search options if you pay, but personally I didn't like the site. I need to see a photo early on to know if there's any chance, because I'm shallow like that!

there are plenty of other dating sites out there, some are completely free but you probably get a better class on the paying sites. depends what you're looking for :o)
