Puppy's First Season
I have a shih tzu/poodle cross puppy bitch and they say don't have them speyed until six months. So I waited as I do not want to breed her. 6 months old to the day she came into season but that was 4 weeks ago. I have read 3 weeks is the norm and as soon as I can I will get her "done" as I do not want her to go through this again. Can anyone advise please?

They usually wait until about 3 months after the season (therefore 3 months before the next season) to let all the hormones settle down.
I would give your vet a ring and see what they suggest - they may decide that it would be best to do her now.

Thanks Kita1. I will be having a chat with the vet on Monday about the timing for her op and also if it is usual for her "season" to last as long as it has. I know I will leave it until later on in the year as, after the op, she will be wearing a babygrow with the legs cut out to protect the stiiches. I very much doubt she will nbe able to cope with the plastic headgear they tend to use. I feel sorry for her especially in this heatwave we are having at the moment.
Seasons vary from bitch to bitch, and although three weeks is the norm, they can last longer. I had a bitch mated on day 28 after the males had been in kennels for three weeks! Once she has gone out of season its usual to spay them three months after, as this gives time for the system to return to normal and hormone levels to settle.
It also ensures she is not actually pregnant as some people might not be aware and might take her to be spayed whilst she was carrying puppies.
