I am looking for a climbing plant that I can grow in a pot up against a fence. As the fence is beside a seating area in the garden, it would be nice if it was scented, but imperative that it doesn't attract wasps etc. Any ideas? I like the idea of jasmine but am worried about whether wasps and bees would surround us whilst eating!
Perhaps a climbing version of the Venus Fly Trap, that eats wasps. ;o) Plastic climbers might come in useful. I don't mean to be rude, but Carlton is right, without the insects there would be no flowers in our gardens.
Bees leave people alone and wasps, well yes, they can be a nuisance if you are eating outside. You can buy citronella candles that are meant to repel insects, but, not having tried them, I am not sure if they work.
There are lots to choose from - dozens of climbing roses and clematis, honeysuckle or jasmine (if you've got a sunny sheltered site). Personally I'd settle for sweet peas, they smell wonderful, just need water and dead heading daily, and you're left with a blank canvas at the end of the year, all ship shape and nice and tidy in readiness for the following one. Bees are a necessity and won't bother you if you don't bother them. Citronella candles work well but some find the smell too pungent.
