my hubby is having a strop! he just heard on not the nine o'clock news that britain is an island and went mental...his explaination was that he sat an exam as a teenager and got asked the same question and got marked down for it because they said he was wrong. thinking about it logically, we are not an island (singular) - we are a group of lots of islands with a spare bit of ireland going as well. so my question is what would be the correct description for the british isles as a whole? an archipeligo? help!!!

it can't be! dictionary definition = a tract of land completely surrounded by water, and not large enough to be called a continent.

from geography seems to remember it being called an island country (different from an island)

you shouldn't believe eberything you read on wikipedia. it is clearly contradictory to the dictionary definition. x
