Web cam in Toshiba laptop

In May 09 I bought a Toshiba L350-203 with built-in web cam which I cannot get to work. Have spoken to Toshiba who say that because the cam switches on and I can see myself, there is no fault, when I talk to my son I see him fine but he cannot see me, he gets a square on the screen with a red cross on the camera icon. I also contacted my isp AOL, again no help, I have trawled Google and found many similar complaints, but NO answers. Please can any of the techno buffs at AB help me, it will be much appreciated. What programme are you using? If it is Skype have you checked your privacy settings, they may be blocking people from seeing you. Your son should check his settings too.

make sure you are both using the same versions of the MSN software.

I am back, have spoken to my son as you suggested Chuck and we are on the same version of MSN so could there be another problem?, I don't really want to buy a free standing web cam.
