Hi all my boyfriend has just had 750 put in his account by mistake.

Can he keep it? I ahve told him to move it to another account and NOT spend it just in case!

Does anyone know the law in regards to this?? Can the bank just take it back?

Many thanks

But I would have read the T&C first before being stupid enough to sign up for them. You usually have to sign that you have read and agree to them. If you sign without reading them then more fool you.
Hi neptun1982, I have seen a story like this in the news, although the amount paid in error was in thousands not a few hundred. The person concerned spent the money, was prosecuted and went to prison!
I am sure this would not be the case, but the fact is that your boyfriend realises that the money does not belong to him and legally he has to return it. I am sure the bank will find out and want their money back, I also believe that they have a right to ask for interest as well if you keep it for any length of time.
The best thing to do is to contact them and let them know. You could try charging them for your time spent in having to deal with this and negotiate a small reduction on the amount you pay back! I would as this has put you to some trouble!
Cheers Sue.
I really find it shocking that anyone would even consider keeping money that is not theirs! People are so dishonest these days, how would your boyfriend feel it he had keyed in the wrong account number when transfering money, perhaps to you, and was then told that the person whose bank account it went to had spent it?
Does he have any morals, regardless of what the law says?
