yesterday when I was waiting to pay for my shopping, a young woman slapped her daughter's legs pretty hard.  She was about 3.  I don't know what she had done but her screams brought all the shoppers and till assistants attention to it and we all stood around feeling awkward and sort of tutting and mumbling.  The woman told her daughter off and picked her up and walked off down an aisle. I know what its like to try to shop with young children but has anybody else been in this situation and thought about intervening?

When I was about 8-9 we lived near a family who had an only son.

He was one of those kids who had everything (brand new chopper bike my brother reminds me from time to time!)

However, my memories of living there were watching his father beat him violently in the street if he was a minute late going home.  I saw him smack his head against the side of a shingle covered garage and remember it like it was yesterday (I am now 35).

Ironically years later they moved near my parents again and so did the son, he bought a place 2 doors up.

But not long after they fell out, the son is now evil towards his parents, he toys with their affections, hes marrying soon and he didnt even tell them let alone invite them.  He walks passed his parents in the street etc.  The list goes on.  His parents are gutted, the mother talks with my mother and breaks her heart, its sending both of them over the top.

mmmm what goes around comes around - food for thought??????

sunflower68 her reaction was to give me a mouthful too!  It was only a friend that she was with that stopped her, saying it wasn't worth the hassle and perhaps she should calm down.

There is a high teenage pregnancy rate where I live and I find it hardly surprising that behaviour in these children (and their parents) leaves something to be desired.  These mums had hardly had to time to develop, let alone gain enough experience in life to be able to educate their children in matters such as behaviour and respect for others

I agree with scullywoo, too many kids today get away with murder and have no respect for adults or authority! When I was at school teachers used to go over the top by really laying into the pupils and even thumping us on the head! That should NEVER be allowed in schools, but I do strongly feel that teenagers in particular need some kind of discipline like the strap when they have overstepped the mark. These days teachers can't teach because the kids take no notice and fool around in the classroom. They are all fully aware that the so-called authority of the teacher is zilch! I have brought up a 19 year old daughter and now also have a 2 year old. My eldest can recall the times that I slapped her (3 times in all) and also remembers: 1) what it was for, 2) remembers being warned several times befor being slpped and 3) the most important that she wasn't slapped because I didn't love her. I always reinforced my love for her. She and I are like sisters now and pretty much do everything together! My youngest is slightly more spirited than her big sis, and does occasionally recieve a little slap on her bottom or legs, but I have never slpped her so hard as to leave a mark! Verbal abuse is much worse than beatings as a child can be made to feel inadequate, ugly and inferior which stays with them all their lives into adulthood. (sorry this was so long.. I just feel quite strongly about this subject!)
