In your eyes what are the top 5 most important summer travel essentials to take away with you?

Sun screen, sun glasses, camera, Lonely Planet guide, drinking boots!

Passport, Visa card, Amex card, essential medication, and tickets

Passport, money, tickets, medication and suncream

I would say walkman (and cd's!), camera, sarong (can be used for anything - towel,hat, blanket,skirt....), suncream and a friend : )

First league: Passport, ticket(s), money (including knowing what to do if it is lost/stolen), insurance contact details (including EU form as appropriate), driver's licence

 

Second league: glasses/contacts and ancillaries, toothbrush and dental floss, shaver/tampons, comb, emergency sewing/repair kit

Some of the latter group (which in fact should be several items bigger) may look too finicky but Murphy's law will strike if you don't have them and then you may end up losing a lot of time (and possibly paying silly money for some) trying to overcome the handicap.
