Ants

Normally my low garden wall has quite a few ants scurrying around it which makes it impossible to sit down on it without the little blighters walking all over me. Yesterday, I managed to sit on the wall as there wasn't an ant to be seen anywhere I looked in my garden.
Today has been the usual one day of the year when thousands of "flying ants " were flying around in my area.
Is there any connection between the absence of ants yesterday and the thousands of flying ants today?
