There are lots of back to front 'P' things after my text.  How do I get rid of them?

You should have an icon on your standard toolbar at the top of the screen with the same symbol on, click on that and they will go away.
Its just to show you were the spaces are

Actually, clicking on that icon on the toolbar shows ALL the invisible characters as visible symbols.  The symbol described by luckystrike shows where 'Carriage Returns' have been pressed.  Spaces just show up as decimal points and tabs show up as right pointing arrows.  They are the most commonly used symbols.

BTW, the icon on the toolbar is a toggle.  Click it once and the feature switches on, click it again and the feature switches off.
