Children's Book, 70's/80's

I'm trying to trace a children's picture/story book, but cannot remember the name of it.

It's about a (I know this sounds surreal...) wrecking ball attached to a crane, which has eyes and sharp teeth, and eats everything in it's path. It gets bigger as the story goes on. I think it's part of a series of books.

Might this be The Iron Man, by Ted Hughes? I seem to remember reading it at school around the late 70s.
