Just wondered how much other vets charge for this operation (fortunately not my dog!) She's a fairly small terrier type, had a tooth abcess which has been treated with antibiotics and gone down. The vet thinks that the tooth ought to come out, cost of operation - £250!! Does this sound rather a lot to pet owners (or vets) out there?

Not really if a general anaesthetic is involved which i think it would be.
I agree with woofgang.

As well as the tooth extraction they will probably clean the other teeth and give a total check up of all the teeth to make sure there are no other dental problems.

You could always phone around other vets in your area, or even get a second opinion but you will probably find that they all charge around the same.
It will probably involve a blood test too before having an anaesthetic ,which on it's own is about £70.00.
Seems a lot to me, I would ring round. The smaller 'one man band' vets tend to be cheaper than the bigger practices with vet hospitals and loads of staff. A castration or hip scoring which involves an anesthetic would only be around £150 for most breeds, and I would expect a tooth extraction to be similar
I recently paid £70 to have a dogs teeth cleaned and one of them removed. £250 seems a bit steep.

Thank you all - I think it's a bit steep and my friend is ringing round some local vets to see how much the charges vary.
My dog has just had some teeth out with cleaning, the letter they sent me after the operation said £400.38, i argued that they price thay gave me at the time of check up was about £300 so we agreed £320. so your amount seems very good..
