NIts!!!

My daughter came home from school with nits at the end of term. Since then we have been trying to get rid of them with no success at all!

We have used Full Marks and Lyclear, following the instructions to the letter and sometimes leaving them on a little longer than we should. All in all the poor love has been treated five times now as well as regular fine tooth combing.

Does any one have any advice of how to get rid of them once and for all?

Also ask your health visitor what is working at the moment - the nits seem to build up immunities to products. Keep using the nit comb to remove eggs and to break the legs of the adult nits - they can't breed when their legs are broken (if only same were true of them in Burnley). Like divegirl says, if you are treating across the timespan of the nit life cycle then she must be picking up fresh supplies from a friend or family contact.

When bathing shampoo hair and dunk scalp under water for 3mins - drowns lice. Done habitually will drown nit-eggs when they hatch into lice.

10second microwaved hats etc will kill nits/lice/fleas/bugs in garments.

Bathing as recommended usually works.

No 2 remedy: Use with care! Spray insecticide into polythene scalp-cap (from hair salons) secure cap to scalp twisting polythene to tighten to scalp secured with clip. Leave for 10mins.

Use tea tree oil... mix it with conditioner and comb relentlessly through the hair with a nit comb. In fact, if you can get tea tree shampoo, use that and then use the tea-tree oil in the conditioner...

A few methods to try there.

Are you treating the whole family? Lice are very inclusive, so if you don;t treat everyone, you will simply re-infect each other for ever more.

If you break the cycle - and any of those methods seem to have merits, you will get rid of the lice.

Bite the bullet and tell your daughter's school. The reason why head lice are pandemic is because of the stigma attatched to catching them, when in fact they should be viewed in the same was as the common cold - something people catch in proximity to infected people.

When my daughter was at juinor school and got them a couple of times, a hairdresser suggested that when i washed her hair i added salt the the water i used to rinse it,she claimed this dehydrated and killed them. I followed her advice and she stayed clear from then on, of course there is nothing to say this was why, it could of been coincidence, but as it was non toxic i was happy do continue doing so lond term, and then her doing it herself until she left school.Good luck, nit`s are the curse of the school years xx

Make sure you treat the whole family even if you haven't found any on the others. The one treatment that worked for us was the conditioner method. I don't think you should keep using chemicals on your heads and Full marks didn't work at all on my son either.
Wash the hair,smooth over loads of conditioner and comb through with a nit comb. This catches loads-do all the family at the same time and repeat every few days . Report it to the school so that everyone is vigilant.
I don't think there is a 'once and for all' treatment especially while your daughter is still at school.

Thank you to all for your answers. Seems that these everlasting nits are a common problem. I am now armed with a Nitty Gritty comb, conditioner and a jug of salt water for rinsing!

I\\\'ve heard that nit nurse is quite good, it\\\'s natural and non toxic so it should be kinder to the scalp, if not to the nits and headlice !
