Sad loss of Al Martino

Very sad to hear the passing of Al Martino, but at least his death was reported more widely than that of that other great 50s star Frankie Laine, yet he was still singing when in his 90s.

I saw Al Martini live in the 50s, expecting to hear him sing the favourites just like we had heard on those 78s records. But sadly I was most disappointed by his performance, which was so poor many walked out of the theatre.

He had the very first Number One record, didn't he... but (perhaps for that reason) I don't think in those days singers had a hard-and-fast list of recent 'hits' to sing, and perhaps he just sang a wide range of songs from his repertoire that weren't necessarily familiar to British audiences. A shame if he didn't tailor his act more carefully to his audience, I think I'd have been disappointed too.
