AWOL is another one a lot of people get wrong, believing it to mean, Absent WithOut Leave, which it doesn't.

the OED says it's from 'absent without (official) leave'. The parentheses it uses suggest 'official' isn't necessarily part of it. It says it's from the 1920s, which is much earlier than I thought, though still later than posh.
