Dutch Elm Disease

A tree in Brighton has been condemned due to Dutch Elm Disease, they have already cut off the branches and sliced off the bark at the bottom.

I thought it had been eradicated! Is this not so?

As you drive or walk past hedge rows (this glorious summer) look at the trees in it. if you see one that has no leaves on it, a tinge of green algae on its stems/bark then it is most probably an elm tree that is dead due to the dutch elm disease. responsible farmers whose hedge it is will cut it down, most dont and the disease spreads. Pruning the hedge rows is the best way to keep the elm trees healthy. Most over grown hedgerows have a few dead elms in it.
