you have not got the correct software installed on the computer to open the file then, what is the file extension (the bit after the . at the end)

if you say what that is then somebody will be able to say what you need to open the file.

Hi, Chuck, now i'm more confused, I don't understand , what do you mean by 'file extention' ? Is that the IE5\BMIW05 (uncomplete) on the message or what ? The attachement just says CHS (606 bytes) .It's from 'Experian'
the full file name will be made up of two parts separated by a full stop, the part after the full stop is the file extension and it's this part that tells the computer what sort of file it is and what to use to open it.
Question Author
Thanks again ,but were do I look to find said file name ?
Question Author
Attachment is named 'Report.CHS (606 bytes) ,is it the CHS that's needed ?
If you are using Outlook Express to receive emails, you should get the attachment via a paperclip. When you click on it, you may get the choice to Run or Save the attachment. Click on Save and save it to your desktop. You should then be able to open the attachment.
Question Author
No paperclip ,just the file in Attach line, on clicking just get Open or Cancel,Click on Open and get the previously stated message . I am totally at a loss (bit of a dinosaur, really)
I assume you did a LEFT click on the file in the attach line???
Try a RIGHT click and see if you can then click on PROPERTIES or any other option.
Any Help??

Have right clicked, tried to Open with no luck, saved to 'my documents' tried to open with Adobe Reader 9 but it ,AR9, says it cannot open as the decoding is incorrect. Have emailed back to sender to see if they can help. At least I realise now that it is a 'CHS' file (whatever that may be !)
