London Bombings...Underground

Sorry to bring this up so soon, but what measures will they introduce to the underground? Surely not bag screening or sniffer machines?

Haven't seen tomorrows headlines, but if the red tops are screaming "How Could this Happen ?!!!!", then yes, we need metal detectors, explosive sniffers and random searches every time we set foot on a bus or train.

This, of course, will cost money, which we as either the fare payer or as the tax payer, we will have to pay for.

Cue screaming headlines of "Why Are We Paying So Much In Fares / Taxes ?!!!!!"

I could rant on but I probably have / will in another thread. Unfortunately, today's events have just given Bush / Blair et al justification for their war and almost guaranteed the introduction of ID cards in the UK. (Since, of course, a piece of plastic with a copy of your iris imprint on a chip will stop a bomb blast on the top of a double-decker.)

I understand that X-ray machines may be implemented, but it's too early to tell. Anyone who has seen Covent Garden tube station in the middle of summer will know how much that would slow the pedestrian traffic. And to little avail, I feel. We are up against people who are unafraid to die.

I travelled on Eurostar a couple of days after the World Trade Centre attacks. Our journeys were delayed by extra security, sniffer dogs checked all the luggage etc. Bearing in mind how fresh the horror was in everyone's minds, people were still complaining, moaning about the delay. Life will soon return to normal in London and people will not want the inconvenience of maximum security. I can't see how they can possibly screen everyone thoroughly and still run the system.

This is what terrorists want, they want us to restrict our own lives with ever more draconian "security" measures. Look at the air industry, the completely hystercial search for sharp objects. Don't they realise that 911 ended hijacking as a tactic. Yet we still get pulled up for having a set of nail clippers.

You can't screen everyone all you can do is be reasonably vigilant.
