am I alone in thinking that another name should be used for those foul scum that abuse and torture children, why do they have to be refered to as men ( or women) it is degrading to those in society that really are men and women and live decent lives, call them what you like they are still called men or women in news reports and I cringe with horror to feel I am lumped together with these scum under the same name.

it depends what papers you read, the red-tops prefer the term pedo. either way they are still men and women, they are genetic labels, nothing more. would understand if you were objecting to them being called gentlemen or ladies.

The term paedophile covers(according to the dictionary) both men AND women.
It is just that most(byt not all) paedophiles are men.
There ARE female paedophiles.
Paedophile actually makes no reference to the sex of the offender,it means "lover of children" in its defined term.

in any crime report, gender specification is normally key to placing that steretypical plant into your barin.

seeing that man did this a man did that is (within reason of course) losing its shock effect, so the words pedo, pervert, monster etc etc areused. reporting that woman did this still causes ripples of shock, so if a headline just referred to a monster or a pedo, people would agree that the person is an evil inhuman monster. say it is a woman and the impact on social sensitivities is greater. saying it is an asian, black, muslim, gyspy , or assylum seeker has more or less the same effect.

yes they are monsters, but they also have a gender classification. try not to view it as a an abstract noun or a verb.

There is a certain sort of competeive compassion - you saw it best illustrated at the death of Diana where people's extreme outpouring of grief subconciously becomes competeive. The equate themselves as better than the next person because they "care more".

This seems to afflict women most.

Amoungst men there seems to be a roughly equivilent behaviour but with a rather violent streak. Sometimes it's directed at Muslims or Gypsies but most often towards Paedophiles.

I find your "question" rather in that vein.

I find it particularly disturbing because it's an overt attempt to deliberately de-humanise someone - once you've stopped thinking of someone as a person it's so much easier to commit the most violent attrocities.

The Scottish guy who photographed himself raping an 18 month old boy got life, well he actually got 16 years that is absolute farcical bullshit and EVERYBODY knows it. Whether you like it or not, the people who have sex with children, the people that torture others, the people that commit mass genocide are all still people, they are all still human beings just like you or I. I fear distancing ourselves from them does little to help anyone. We should seek to understand how people can do such terrible acts, what influences people to commit such crimes. Only then can we (with any success) try to stop these kinds of things happening in the future.

To understand how people can do such terrible acts, what influences people to commit such crimes, perhaps you should take into consideration that victims who have been denied justice are those most likely to perpetuate, if not the same than an equally egregious or greater, offence.

To equivocate humanity with the worst amongst us is an offence to the best amongst us. Nothing defines our humanity better that the ability to rise above that which we are predisposed to be.

Responsibility is an inescapable fact of reality which must none the less be acknowedged if we are to define ourselves as responsible card carrying members of the human race.
