In XP, if you click "Start", "All Programs", you get several colums which list all the programs on the computer.
How can I make those colums narrower?

When you now go to "Programs" on the start menu (on the Classic menu it's not called "All Programs"), you''l get a single column of all your programs. If there are too many to fit, you'll see a little arrowhead at the bottom; mouse over it to scroll down, at which point a similar arrowhead will appear at the top, to allow you to scroll up.

I use the Classic Start menu because I like it better than the standard XP layout . You can also make "folders" for your programs by adding sections like TOOLS, SECURITY, PRINTING, OFFICE, GRAPHICS, etc and keep similar programs in the same folder. This makes a neater presentation and makes the programs easier/quicker to find.
