28a Indicate peril? Illiterates certainly can't! (5, 6) - P - L- - - N E - I suspect SPELL something. Oh, and can someone explain why 25d Former guards you heard at the right time (2, 3) is ON CUE, please? UE is you heard, does ONC stand for former guards? Thanks in advance.

25d former = once, you heard = u, guards means put the latter inside of the former
