I've seen 24D answered before as Henry (as in Thierriy 'handball' Henry) but I don't see how it fits the clue

Henry would be the probable answer - as in Thierry Henry the French footballer. Remember his handball subsequently led toIreland being eliminated from the World Cup Finals.

No trappings = no decorations (ie medals)

For Trapp = Republic of Ireland's football manager (Giovanni Trapattoni)
