Help needed trying to find parents
48 Answers
Hi I am trying to trace the parents of Hannah Rebecca Ludlam born in 1870 in Shirland Derbyshire. She married Albert Carlin in 1892 but I am really struggling to find concrete evidence of her parents. Any help appreciated.

I just entered Hannah Ludlam, Derbyshire as the county, & 1870 for her year of birth. Just the one entry came up & it was the one I was looking for. The transcriptions on the Morman website can be very inaccurate at times.
What an interesting read, now you have got me thinking!! My mothers family have their farm in the same name and family for about 350 years so I would like to have a look at my roots, Would one of you kindly give me a few links and tell me how to get started. I'm excited already, Thank you in advance and a very happy new year to you all,
Whitelady, try ancestry.co.uk (I understand it is free at some local libraries). Use ancestry to look up your family on the census returns, which should be available from 1901 - 1841. You will need findmypast to look up the 1911 census.
If the farm is local to you, contact your local records office and go and look at the parish registers.
You can also use freebmd.org.uk (free site for civil registration - not complete), findmypast.com (subscription or pay per view for the full index of civil bmd registrations), familysearch.org (free site for 1881 Census and some parish registers - again incomplete and treat with caution because some are entries submitted by the members and not always correct), freereg.org.uk (again free site for parish registers but only very limited so far), you may also find some information on the pro.gov.uk - always worth doing a search there - I have turned up a number of family documents and wills there.
