DVD RW not working

Seem to be having a problem with my dvd drive on my laptop , its not showing up in my documents so i switch laptop off and occasionally it will show up but more often than not just lately its not showing. Had laptop about 3 yrs so is it likely i need to replace it with a new one ( well shop not me would nt have a clue ) Been into device manager and it says its working ok but to look at troubleshooter if having problem with it but theres nothing in there which relates to not showing up in my computor. Its playing some discs but not others also. what is a rough price for one? regards A.

It may simply need a clean - when did you last clean it...?

If you can manage with an external one, Amazon have them for about £30-£40. Internal about the same price if you're confident about installing it yourself (maybe not if your comments are anything to go by)
