4 Answers
My ex partner purchased a new mobile phone a while ago and used my address to register it, i am also getting debt collectors letters for him for non payment of his debts from when he lived here, i have asked him to give these people his new address but he refuses, he was also still using my credit card to go food shopping /fill this other womans car with petrol and taking cash out on it, when i spoke with the cc company i was told as he was an additional card holder i could do nothing, i told them i have proof he was no longer living here at the time but they did not want to know...he has left me with rather a lot of debt both in my name and joint which i am trying to deal with via the cab, he is a police officer in the met would there be anyone there i could speak to about all this mess? any help would really be appreciated am totally stressed out with all this..

Cherry: thanks for answering...as he is a police officer i did go to his station 18 months ago and spoke with his sergeant who was very helpful he contacted him and told him he has to take responsibilty and deal with it, sadly he did not and the debt has now risen to a scary amount as he stopped paying the joint debt which he had run up, he ran up a large overdraft with the bank (joint acct but i never used it had my own) and merely opened a new acct and left it to me to deal with the fallout, his own debts he stopped paying 2 months after i spoke with his sergeant hence the debt collectors letters i keep getting for him, i do not know whether to go back to his sergeant or speak with someone higher in the met, but who i just dont know ...
Okay, go to Equifax and Experian and file what is known as "a notice of disassociation" - this means that your credit history will no longer be financially associated with your husband. You can also put a note on your credit file that your husband no longer lives at your address. This will stop him from getting credit as easily.
If you are an additional card holder, then it is not your credit card but his credit card - he is solely responsible for this debt, it has nothing to do with you.
There is no one you can speak to at his work - this is a domestic issue and needs to be sorted out as such.

Yes, it really has nothing to do with his job or his employers, regardless of him being a police officer and that isn't the way to deal with it. I'm also not sure where there's fraud involved here so I don't think the first answer is very valid. So far as I can see from what we're told, he's not puting debt in anyone else's name, he's merely using existing joint facilities and hasn't changed the address on his own bills (is that fraud?). I suppose it may have been fraudulent if he bought the phone after he left but registered it at your address. It isn't clear if that's what he did or he bought it before leaving?
If he had an additional card on your credit card account then until you revoke that (I presume you have done that?) then he can carry on legally obtaining credit for anything he likes up to whatever the limit is. He doesn't need your permission and where he actually lives is irrelevant. Many people have an additional holder who doesn't live with them (a son or daughter at college for instance).
You aren't responsible for his debts regardless of where he has told the debtors he lives. You unfortunately ARE responsible for joint debts. Get any joint accounts closed or frozen if they aren't already. As you are already speaking to the CAB I doubt there's anything more that anyone here can tell you of much use.
